Canterbury Riesling 2011

Our 2011 vintage is now available.

Braided River is a family run vineyard in West Melton, near Christchurch and takes its name from the Waimakiriri River, one of New Zealand’s iconic braided rivers. The river is dynamic, provides water for the vines and has shaped the land.  The wines reflect this unique terroir.

Single Vineyard Canterbury Riesling 2010

The Riesling grapes were handpicked, by the usual dedicated team of friends and colleagues, on May 1st.

The 2011 vintage is dry. Delicate flora aromas  and zesty citrus flavours make this young Riesling a pleasure to drink.  Hints of minerality, gained from the old riverbed on which these grapes were grown, add to this wine’s complexity.

The 2011 growing season was fabulous for grapes.  Warm but with enoug moisture to maintain greeness throughout the vineyard.  No irrigation was used apart from minimal frost irrigation early in the season. A good fruit set resulted in large numbers of small berries.

The grapes were transported to Lone Goat Vineyard where they were whole bunch pressed, cold settled and then fermented slowly in stainless steel tanks.

The wine was bottled on December 20th 2011
